Excerpt from Mysterious Ways:
“There was a new guest entering the party. Miela’s eyes watched him cross the room. He asked for a drink first, taking his time joining the crowd. There was a group of young people that had caught his attention. He watched them carefully, apparently with disapproval. She watched him slowly walk across the room to join them, reluctantly. While she could not see his face beyond the hideous mask, she knew it was Johannes Gutenberg.

His curly dark hair touching the shirt collar on the back of his neck, his short curly beard extending slightly beyond the bottom of the mask, the very deliberate way he moved across the room all gave it away for Miela. She knew this man. She knew his purposeful actions. Immediately she rushed toward him to make him aware of her presence, but drew up short when he turned away from the group and headed towards a group of older women. She watched as he took several of the ladies hands and individually pressed their fingers where the “lips” of his mask were located. Other men had done likewise, only they lifted their masks to reveal their identity and actually touch a gentle kiss to their fingers. But not Johannes. He maintained his incognito status and appeared to rifle a few feathers by not identifying himself to the stuffy ladies, much to their chagrin.

Miela smiled very broadly. She could see he was playing a game. Hoping to catch him off guard, she quickly poured another glass of brandy, placed it on her tray and sashayed to his side. “Herr Gargoyle, may I interest you in a very strong brandy? Or perhaps a flue with super heated combustible gases piped through a wall?” Johannes spun on his heels in shock. Miela. She was here. And not only that, but she recognized him in five minutes without even hearing his voice.

“Frau McCormick, What are you doing here? And how in the world did you recognize me without hearing my voice?

“Johannes, I recognized your movements; your very deliberate actions. And I saw your eyes. To answer your other question, I am here to earn some money. I can think of a lot of worse ways to achieve that besides serving food and drinks to some very snobby people. And you are excluded from that observation sir!” Miela laughed a little too loudly and drew the attention of most of the room.
Johannes looked in the direction of his fiancé, looking very nice in her deep green dress trimmed in crimson accents. If her nose was a little shorter, her eyes a little less deep set, and if her chin actually existed, she might have looked pretty. He caught Ennel’s eyes and realized she still did not have any idea who he was behind his mask. But he realized he had the advantage in recognizing Ennel, as she kept dropping her little stick mask and showing her entire face.

As for Miela, he could recognize her anywhere. Her hair color, her beautiful smile, her easy laughter, her lack of pretense and protocol. Oh Lord, he could go on and on.

Johannes realized he had a serious problem. Betrothed to a little mouse for her money, while falling for a penniless beauty that was capturing his soul.”
